Google Announces Google Biking Directions

The League of American Bicyclists is proud to be the forum for Google to announce what all bike riders have been waiting for – Grab Your Bike and Go with Google Maps. Google is announcing at the Opening Plenary Session at the National Bike Summit that they are adding biking directions in the U.S. to Google Maps.”This new tool will open people’s eyes to the possibility and practicality of hopping on a bike and riding,” said Andy Clarke, President of the League of American Bicyclists. “We know people want to ride more, and we know it’s good for people and communities when they do ride more – this makes it possible. MDOT I-275 Metro Trail (Hines Drive to Michigan Ave)

MDOT and project team staff will host an open house to provide an overview of the project scope and boundaries of this approximately 7-mile section of the I-275 Metro Trail. This section is planned for reconstruction beginning this spring. There will be an opportunity to provide written feedback and input on various elements of the project including trail signs and bridge aesthetics. For more information follow this link.

MDOT Five Year Transportation Program

MDOT shares details of reduced 2011-2014 Five-Year Transportation Program

February 12, 2010 — The state’s recently approved 2010-2014 Five-Year Transportation Program has been posted online by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) on the MDOT Web site at: www.michigan.gov/mdot5yearplan. MDOT also has also posted a new document titled “Financial Crisis Key Messages” to the Web. This document identifies funding strategies for a department that is faced with the reality that there will be insufficient state revenues available to match all of the estimated available federal funds beginning in 2011. The 2010-2014 Five-Year Program was approved by the State Transportation commission at its Jan. 28 meeting. The department must submit the Five Year Program to the Michigan Legislature by March 1. Mackinac Bridge Labor Day Run

The seventh annual Mackinac Bridge Labor Day Run lottery is now open and taking applications for the opportunity to be one of 400 runners and wheeling athleGovernors Logotes who lead the way across the Mighty Mac as the sun rises.

The Bridge Run is a five mile non-competitive run over the Mackinac Bridge, sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance. It is organized by the Governor’s office, the Michigan Fitness Foundation, and the Mackinac Bridge Authority. This is not a timed event and the course will not be certified for Distance. The Bridge Run is limited to 400 participants who will be selected from a lottery drawing in June, 2010. For qualification requirements and to register, click here.

The Michigan Trails and Greenways Alliance, League of Michigan Bicyclists, and Michigan Mountain Biking Association are pleased to announce they are joining forces for the 2010 Lucinda Means Bicycle Advocacy Day. A traditional bike parade to the State Capitol will kick off the event, which will take place on the Capitol’s north lawn on Wednesday, May 26, 2010, starting at 9 a.m.

Safe Routes to School and Trails Database Now Online!

Michigan Trails and Greenways Alliance teamed up with Michigan State University RS and GIS Center to map the state’s trails in relation to elementary and middle schools. Trails can serve SR2S Logoas an important artery for children walking and biking to school if they are aligned properly with a connection to nearby neighborhoods. Check your county to see whether there are trails within a 2-mile radius to your local school that could be part of a safe routes to school network.
